Where to Put a Home Infrared Sauna: A Room-by-Room Installation Guide

So you’ve finally pulled the trigger on buying a home sauna. Congrats! If you’re like so many, now comes the hard part of figuring out exactly where you’re going to put this thing. This happens so much more often than you might think.

You pick the right model for your needs, one that fits your budget and has the right size. But, it’s very easy to not think about where you’re going to place this sauna. This is a bigger decision than you might realize. Sauna placement could be what decides whether you’ll be using it three times a week for the next decade or whether it’ll sit in a weird corner, ignored.

If you put it in the right place, your sauna can turn into a daily habit pretty fast. Get this wrong and you very well could end up with warped wood, a fried circuit, a voided warranty, or even worse, you’ll just stop using it.

Below, we go over everything to think about before the delivery truck shows up. We’ll go into detail about the electrical stuff, the clearance, and answer honestly as to whether you can put one outside (spoiler: mostly no). And, of course, which room in your house actually makes the most sense to put a sauna in.

The 5 Things Your Space Needs (Before You Pick a Room)

Walk through this checklist before you start measuring corners. If the space doesn’t hit all five, look somewhere else.

First, look for a dedicated outlet. And no, not the one your fridge is on. That’s not what you’re looking for here.

This one’s non-negotiable. Most 1-person and 2-person Healthmate saunas run off a standard 120V, 20-amp circuit. Bigger units, such as a 3-person, a 4-person, or anything commercial, usually need 240V hardwired in. That means you’ll need an electrician, as this is not a DIY job.

Here’s what you can’t ever do: power your sauna through an extension cord, a power strip, or a circuit that’s already running something else. See, saunas pull a lot of sustained current. If you try a workaround, it’s probably going to melt. Sometimes, they may even catch fire. The breaker will at least trip mid-session, which is both annoying and the best-case scenario. At worst, it’s a real safety problem.

If the room you’re eyeing doesn’t have a dedicated outlet within a few feet of the sauna spot, get a quote from an electrician before you order. Why? Adding a new circuit usually runs somewhere in the $200-$600 range.

A floor that can take the weight

Healthmate units run between 200 and 600 pounds assembled, depending on size. The floor where you place this needs to be able to take that without sagging or tilting. Concrete is perfect. So is tile, hardwood, vinyl, and low-pile carpet. What you want to avoid is plush carpet, a floor that’s been water-damaged before, or anything with a noticeable slope.

A few inches of breathing room on every side

People love to shove their sauna up flush against the wall to save space. Don’t. You’ll trap heat against the drywall and it very well could scorch over time. Plus, it will block the airflow the electronics need, thus making any future service a nightmare. Leave about 4 to 6 inches on each side and behind the sauna. If you don’t have a way to measure, that’s basically the width of your hand.

Some airflow, but not a fan

Infrared saunas don’t make steam, so you don’t need ductwork or an exhaust fan or any of that. What you need is for the room to not be hermetically sealed. A cracked door, a window, a normal HVAC, and so forth are all options that can work. What you want to avoid is sticking it in a small, sealed closet with no airflow at all.

A path that the sauna can actually travel to its destination

This may sound obvious, but people forget this all the time. See, saunas ship flat-packed, and then you assemble them in your room. Those panels still have to get from your front door to the room.

So, you have to measure every doorway, hallway, and stair turn between point A and point B. Most Healthmate panels clear a standard 30-inch interior door. But in narrow old homes? Tight staircase landings? That’s worth measuring twice before the sauna arrives.

The Best Indoor Spots (Ranked Roughly by How Many People Pick Them)

Once you’ve completed the checklist above, then, it’s time to figure out which room to put your sauna in. Here’s what most Healthmate owners go with.

The basement is the runaway winner

Basements top the list for three big reasons. First, the soil around them acts like free insulation, so the sauna holds heat well and warms up fast. Additionally, the electrical panel is usually right there, which keeps installation costs down. And last but not least, unfinished basements tend to have all the headroom and footprint you’d need for even a 4-person model.

What you need to watch for in your basement, though, is humidity. If your basement floods or has chronic issues with dampness, that’ll eat into the wood over time. How do you fix this? It’s simple. Run a dehumidifier in the off-months and don’t install your sauna in a basement with active moisture problems.

Master bathroom or en-suite

If you’ve got the square footage, the bathroom is a genuinely great option. You step out of the sauna, and you step right into the shower, done. The space is already plumbed for moisture-tolerant fixtures and your post-session rinse is right there.

The catch with the bathroom, though, is size. A lot of master baths don’t have an open 5×5 footprint, and you don’t want the unit blocking the toilet or vanity. Usually, a 2-person Inspire 2 or Enrich 2 fits just right here.

Spare bedroom or home office

Converting a spare room into a wellness room is another of the most popular steps new sauna owners take. It’s easy to see why. It’s quiet, private, and the door closes. Pair the sauna with a mat, a meditation cushion, as well as a small shelf with whatever you want to read in there, and you’ve built yourself a really nice space.

If you work from home, a midday session in the home office could be exactly what you need to power through the rest of your work day. It sure beats a coffee break.

Walk-in closet conversion

This one’s creative but it works, especially in big walk-in closets off of a primary bedroom. Clear out the clothes, run a dedicated circuit, and drop in a 1-person or compact 2-person. Just remember: closets are usually sealed. So, it’s best to keep the door cracked or add a small wall vent.

Living room or finished den

This is, in so many ways, the showpiece spot. A wood-grain Healthmate in a finished den looks legitimately good, especially if you go with the Inspire line and its gorgeous glass aesthetic. The trade-off is the visual footprint and the traffic flow through the room. Some people love the statement it makes. But, others want the sauna tucked away.

What About the Garage?

Garage installation is becoming more and more popular, especially in homes with attached, insulated garages. You get the basement perks (electrical panel nearby, hard floor, and no bedroom disruption) without giving up living space.

There are a few things to keep in mind about putting your sauna in the garage, however.

Climate is the big one. An insulated or climate-controlled garage is a great environment for your sauna all year-round, no problem. However, an unconditioned garage in a cold winter? That’s workable, but the sauna’s warm-up time can double. Plus, hot, humid summer garages aren’t great for the wood and electronics over the long haul.

The fix for this: insulating the walls and ceiling. Or, alternatively, you can just decide to use it in some seasons and not in others. Between 50°F and 85°F ambient temperature tends to be the sweet spot for the garage.

Something else to keep in mind: GFCI breakers are mandatory in garages. Most electrical codes classify the garage as semi-humid, so the outlet has to be GFCI-protected. If your existing garage outlets aren’t, it’s a fairly standard upgrade.

In terms of flooring, concrete is structurally perfect but cold underfoot in winter and sometimes not perfectly level. A vinyl mat or a sealed concrete finish under the unit goes a long way towards a better sauna experience.

Can You Put an Infrared Sauna Outdoors? The Honest Answer

This is probably the question we’re asked the most. The answer’s more nuanced than yes or no.

Indoor-rated infrared saunas, which include basically all of Healthmate’s residential lineup, should not be installed outdoors. Period. Not even under a covered patio. The manufacturer’s guidance is clear on this, and there are real reasons for this.

First off, humidity changes can damage the wood. But, that’s just the start of the threats to your sauna the outdoors presents. UV breaks down finishes. Rain wrecks electrical components. Freeze-thaw cycles warp panels. Stick an indoor unit outside and you’ll go from a 10-year lifespan to maybe 2 or 3 years. And, as you might imagine, you’ll void the warranty in the process.

That said, there is a compromise. What does work is a fully enclosed in-between space. That means sunrooms, three-season rooms, enclosed porches, and screened-in patios. Basically, you can put them in anything sealed against rain and direct sun. In those rooms, you can get the “feels like outdoors” thing without exposing the unit to weather.

If you really want a sauna out in the open air, you need a purpose-built outdoor sauna, which is a totally different product category with weatherproof construction. That’s not what residential infrared saunas are built for.

Electrical Components Slightly Demystified

Most sauna placement headaches come back to electrical. As you might imagine, this can get very, very complicated. So, here’s the short version:

120V models plug into a regular outlet but need a dedicated 20-amp circuit. That outlet powers the sauna and nothing else. Share the circuit with a freezer or a window AC and the breaker trips the second you flip both on.

240V models are hardwired on a 30- or 40-amp dedicated circuit. If that sounds familiar, there’s a reason for that. It’s the same kind of circuit your dryer or electric stove uses. And, of course, this is almost always installed by a licensed electrician.

An easy way to know which you need: pull up the spec sheet for the model you’re looking at and check the voltage and amperage. If your room doesn’t already have a matching circuit nearby, get a quote before you order. Trust us on this: you don’t want to find out on delivery day.

Sizing the Space

Rough footprints, room sizes, and ceiling needs, made as simple and direct as possible:

  • 1-person: about 36″ x 36″ footprint, fits in a 5×5 room
  • 2-person (Enrich 2, Inspire 2): about 47″ x 40″, needs a 6×6
  • 3-person (Enrich 3, Inspire 3): about 57″ x 45″, needs a 7×7
  • 4-person (Elevated Health, Therapy Lounge): about 72″ x 52″, needs an 8×8

Add clearance on three sides plus door swing in front. Remember: the ceiling needs to be at least 78 inches (6’6″) for any model.

What Delivery Day Actually Looks Like

Putting your sauna in a room you have to walk past three other rooms to get to. Convenience can be what makes the habit stick. If it’s annoying to use, you probably won’t.

Pushing your sauna tight against a wall. This causes so many problems: scorched paint, no airflow, can’t service it, and can’t move it.

Powering your sauna on an extension cord “just for a couple weeks.” A couple weeks turns into forever and eventually the cord fails. Plus, it fails faster than you might think.

Skipping the dedicated circuit. Sharing that with a fridge means your breakers trip mid-session, if not earlier.

Putting your sauna in a damp basement without a dehumidifier. The wood rots from the inside out over 18-24 months and there’s not a great fix.

Not measuring the doorway before your sauna gets there. So, you look forward to the moment when the panels arrive, then they do and they don’t fit, so the panels go back on the truck. Painful.

Will an infrared sauna damage my carpet or hardwood floor?

No. Infrared heats your body, not the surrounding air, so the floor underneath stays close to room temperature. Hardwood, tile, vinyl, and low-pile carpet all work fine. A lot of carpet owners drop a thin moisture-resistant mat under the unit just for cleanliness.

How much clearance does a sauna need around it?

How heavy is an infrared sauna? Will it damage an upstairs floor?
